It was noted by Ornstein that majority of meditation technique’s don’t lie as solitary practices but are just artificially distinguishable through a complete system of belief and practice. It indicates that when monks are involved in mediation as portion of their day to day lives, they will also follow the rules of statute and stay together in monasteries with various cultural settings which are associated with practice of mediation. Such mediation practices will have similarities in many cases that are noticed by Westerners, for example concentration of breath is practice in both Tibetan, Theravadan and Zen contexts and typologies or similarities are generally identified here.

The progress towards difficult problem of defining mediation was tried by recent research of views that were given by seven experts who got trained in various but thoroughly studies mediation types. As per research, 3 important conditions were considered as fundamental for any method of mediation: self-induced mode/state, logic relaxation and defined technique. Classifications of Mediation as per Western Standards:

Various other conditions that are considered important include psychological relaxation state, use of anchor or self-focus technique, the presence of suspension state of legitimate thought processes, a philosophical/spiritual/religious context or state of mental silence. But study mentioned it is reasonable that meditation is considered a natural method which his usually well-defined through prototype model of concepts and family resemblances.

In modern research psychological, mediation is characterized and defined in different ways and most of them stress the role of care. Mediation is generally considered in 2 different categories, mindfulness meditation and concentrative mediation. These 2 types will include very little scope of wide range of techniques for mediation. These 2 types are discussed in below paragraphs, with use of concentrative mediation in mindfulness meditation and focused attention that is interchangeable used with common monitoring.

Direction of mental attention: A mediation practitioner will intensively focus on specific object also known as concentrative mediation on various mental events which lead to field of awareness also known as mindfulness mediation, there are various points and awareness fields.One style of Meditation is focused attention (FA) that means concentrating on specific object. Another style is also known as Open Monitoring which requires passive monitoring of mind as it passes through different moments of experience. An instance of concentrative mediation is known as anapanasati which is an instance of mindfulness meditation. Various other classifications are suggested and certain techniques vary among different categories.

Evidence from neuro-imaging studies indicates that types of meditation which are defined through attention that seem to create various patterns of brainwaves. It has been suggested from scientific proof that with use of various objects at time of mediation, many brainwave patterns could be generated.
